 Немецкая компания Leica выпустила новую цифровую дальномерную фотокамеру со съемным объективом M8. Начало легендарной M-серии было положено в 1954 году моделью M3. Leica M7, появившаяся в 2002 году, стала последней аналоговой пленочной камерой из этой серии. Новая компактная камера Leica M8 сочетает в себе достоинства и традиции аналоговых камер компании с широкими возможностями, которые дает современная цифровая фотография.
Модель Leica M8 обладает десятимегаписельной матрицей, совместима с оптикой Leica M, выпускаемой с 1954 года, и реализует ручную фокусировку при помощи оптического дальномера. Традиционная конструкция серии пропускает лучи света под большим углом. При использовании матрицы это вызывает виньетирование. Чтобы решить проблему производитель матрицы Kodak сделал покрытие из микролинз. Кроме того, объективы Лейки теперь имеют штриховую кодировку. Камера распознаёт установленную оптику и вносит коррективы в изображение. Для достижения максимальной резкости на матрице отсутствует антиалиасинговый фильтр. Избавление от муара происходит на стадии обработки сигнала. Подобное решение ранее использовалось в зеркалках Kodak. Диапазон чувствительности матрицы ISO 160 - 2500. Физический размер сенсора 18 x 27 мм, что соответствует кроп-фактору 1,3. Увеличение видоискателя 0,68. Рамки видоискателя предназначены для объективов: 24 и 35 мм, 28 и 90 мм, 50 и 75 мм. Параллакс автоматически компенсируется. Эффективная база дальномера составляет 47,1 мм. Съёмка производится в двух режимах: приоритет выдержки или полностью ручной режим. В видоискателе отображается отклонение выдержки в полступени. Яркость показаний в видоискателе изменяется в зависимости от окружающей освещённости. Экспозамер центровзвешенный, реализован кремниевым фотодиодом серой пластиной затвора. Впервые в дальномерной серии использован металлический затвор для сокращения габаритов. Диагональ дисплея 6,3 см. Число точек 230 тыс. На верхней стороне корпуса маленький ЖК-экран. Leica M8 поддерживает открытый стандарт DNG для сохранения «сырых» файлов. Среди реализованных цветовых пространств Adobe RGB, sRGB, ECI RGB. В системе вспышек применена технология M-TTL с предварительным оценочным импульсом. Время синхронизации 1/250 с. В комплекте ПО Capture One LE, Leica Digital Capture. Питание от литий-ионной батареи. Сохранение информации на карты памяти SD. Вес 591 г. Цена около 4800 долл.
